DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: A lawyer must be able to gather evidence, advise clients on their rights, draft legal documents, and conduct civil lawsuits. A staff lawyer must interview clients and witnesses with cultural competence and perform other duties by representing clients. A lawyer represents clients before the courts and before quasi-judicial or administrative government authorities. The lawyer also interprets laws, decisions and regulations for clients and the client community. The employed lawyer provides legal assistance in the areas of civil law and family law in general, including but not limited to divorce, custody, protection orders, housing and foreclosure prevention, landlord-tenant, consumers, special education, estate and utilities. The lawyer also designs and conducts community outreach and legal education activities, and works closely with the community and low-income community groups to advance LANWT`s mission to reduce poverty through equal access to the civil justice system.
