Older Americans, like many of their younger counterparts, are increasingly into debt collection. More than a third of the complaints we receive from older consumers relate to debt collection. In some of these complaints, consumers told us that collectors threatened to seize their Supplementary Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and VA benefits, even though these funds generally cannot be seized. We are working with the United Way and the City of Cleveland to expand justice. As of July 1, 2019, seven new laws will go into effect in Virginia. All seven are fairer, cheaper and more renter-friendly. They were all adopted in response to Virginia`s high deportation rate, which is more than double the national average.
