Legal Driving Ages

Footnote 43 In Nebraska, students who are at least 14 years and two months old and who live outside a metropolitan area or attend a school outside a metropolitan area can obtain a learning permit (called an «LPE permit») and a limited permit (called a «school permit»). The EPL licence entitles you to supervised driving for the purpose of preparing for the school licence, which allows you to drive to and from school independently or in another location under the supervision of a parent or guardian. ↩ Footnote 26 In Maine, driver training is required to obtain a permit and license if the applicant is under the age of 18. The period of possession of the driver`s licence and the driving licence certificate applies to applicants for a driving licence under 21 years of age. The period of licence restrictions may extend beyond the person`s 18th birthday. ↩ There is a strong evidence-based case for raising the minimum driving age. If a teenager is caught sending messages or using a cell phone while driving, there should be clear consequences. States have a certain age for apprenticeship permits, limited licenses, full licenses, and rental cars. Multi-level licensing programs have been so effective that states are considering introducing similar programs for older teens (18 to 20 years old) who become first-time drivers.

Footnote 68 In Utah, licensed licensees under the age of 18 may only drive under the supervision of an instructor, parent or guardian, or a responsible adult who has assumed responsibility for the licensee`s conduct by signing the license application. Licence applicants under the age of 19 must be registered for driver training. ↩ Footnote 24 Kentucky law prohibits licensees from driving between midnight and 6 a.m. or carrying more than one passenger under the age of 20 unless supervised by an instructor. ↩ Footnote 6 In Colorado, the minimum age for approval varies. Fifteen-year-olds enrolled in driver training can apply for a teaching licence. Your supervising driver must be a parent, step-parent, grandparent, guardian or driving instructor. At 15.6 months of age, driver training is no longer required, but applicants for this licence must have completed a four-hour driver awareness program. At the age of 16, young drivers can apply for a licence that allows them to drive under the supervision of a licensed driver who is 21 years of age or older.

↩ Help your teen learn to recognize potential safety issues while driving. The minimum age is the minimum age at which a person can obtain a driver`s license to legally drive a motor vehicle on public roads. This age is set by and for each jurisdiction and is most often set at 18, but learner drivers may be allowed to take the road under supervision at an earlier age. Before reaching the minimum age for obtaining a driving licence, or at any time thereafter, a person wishing to obtain a licence is normally subject to a test of fitness to drive and knowledge of the rules of the road before a licence is issued, provided that he or she is over the minimum driving age. The countries with the lowest driving age (17 years and under) are the Bahamas, Canada, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom (mainland), the United States and Zimbabwe. In some jurisdictions in the United States and Canada, drivers may be under the age of 14 (under parental supervision). Among 16- and 17-year-olds, about one-third of fatal car crashes occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. For example, many states have imposed curfews to prevent young people from driving at night. For example, Alabama does not allow teenagers newly licensed to drive between midnight and 6 a.m. North Carolina does not allow teens to drive between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

While the camp is making a strong case for raising the minimum driving age, there are other arguments for keeping things the same. Minimum age may vary depending on the type of vehicle. This list refers to the minimum age for driving a light-duty motor vehicle (generally less than 3500 kg maximum permissible mass) or motorcycle, if applicable. Footnote 8 In Delaware, a rider does not need a driver`s license to drive with an instructor. After meeting the road requirements of driver training, a driver who is at least 15 years old can apply for a driver`s license for 10 months, which allows them to drive under the supervision of an experienced driver. Upon completion of the driver training, and if the student passes both the roadside test and the written test, the student will receive a Level 1 licence, which only allows driving under supervision for the first six months. There is also a passenger restriction for the first six months of Level 1 approval. In addition to the supervising driver, no more than one passenger (except family members) is allowed. The Level 1 approval for the second half of the year is a provisional licence.

During this period, owners are allowed to drive unattended between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. and carry only one passenger. Driver`s licence applicants under the age of 18 must have held a Level 1 driver`s licence and/or licence for at least 12 months. Driver training is mandatory for all licence applicants under the age of 18. ↩ Footnote 14 In Idaho, driver`s license applicants under the age of 17 must have completed driver training. There are three categories of apprenticeship permits: a training permit for individuals who are 14 or 6 months old following driver training; a supervised driver`s licence for driving with a lay supervisor; and a driver`s licence for persons under 17 years of age who have completed driver training and supervised driving, or for persons 17 years of age or older without driver training or supervised driving. ↩ Footnote 3 In Arkansas, 14-year-olds can drive with a driver`s license after passing a written test. After passing the driving test, they are entitled to a driver`s license. Unsupervised driving is not permitted by teacher licence or apprenticeship licence holders. The combined holding period for a licence and learner`s licence is six months. ↩ Footnote 69 In Utah, supervised driving in the learning phase can last up to five hours in a driving simulator.

↩ Footnote 20 Iowa requires certification of an additional 10 hours of supervised driving during the shoulder period, two of which must be completed at night. ↩ Restricted licences have regulations for drivers for a period of time after they get their licence, usually somewhere between the first six months and the first year and a half. Limited licenses generally prohibit the driver from driving at night after a certain time or having more than one passenger under a certain age in the car. Footnote 54 In North Carolina, a person who is at least 16 years of age but under 18 years of age must complete at least 12 additional hours (including six at night) of supervised driving to obtain a full provisional driver`s license. ↩ Each state in the U.S. establishes its own driving laws, including laws on the age at which teens can start driving, and the rules vary widely in terms of multi-level driver`s license requirements. Footnote 72 In Virginia, night driving bans and passenger restrictions apply to licensees. ↩ Footnote 10 In the District of Columbia, drivers under the age of 18 who have completed the intermediate level must comply with a night driver`s license until age 18.

In addition, these drivers are not allowed to carry more than 2 passengers under the age of 21. ↩ Unfortunately, some studies suggest that cell phone restrictions may actually increase the chances of a teen trying to send text messages while driving. In an attempt to hide cell phone use, teens can become even more distracted by trying to type messages secretly. Most provinces and territories recognize driver`s licences issued by another jurisdiction, which may allow a youth to obtain a driver`s licence in a province or territory with a low minimum driving age and to drive in a province or territory that usually has a higher driving age. A notable exception is the United States, where many states prohibit drivers from driving below their minimum driving age, even if they have licenses or licenses issued by another state. Footnote 41 If a Montana driver`s license applicant has completed another Department of Justice-approved online road safety training course and the practical driving component has been taught by the parent or guardian, the supervised driving requirement is 75 hours. including 3 p.m. at night. ↩ A constant question in the safety world was whether the age of driving should be raised. Typically, drivers must be 16 or 17 years old to drive alone. There are many people, including politicians and security experts, who want to raise the age to 18.

Footnote 36 In Minnesota, licence applicants under the age of 18 must be registered for driver training. By July 1, 2014, an optional 90-minute additional program for parents will be in place, providing information on multi-level licensing, safety risks and the possible influence of adults on driving behaviour. ↩ Footnote 61 In Oregon, driver training is mandatory for licence applicants under the age of 18. However, it will be exempt for candidates certifying 50 additional hours of supervised driving. Night and passenger restrictions do not apply to holders of a provisional driver`s licence who are 18 years of age or older.
