Hours: 15-25/week in fall and spring semester; 40/week during the summer Legal interns will work at FIRE`s Philadelphia office over the summer on a range of work, including research for our litigation project Stand Up For Speech, case assessment, and letter writing to combat violations with our individual advocacy program, and policy analysis for our law and policy reform teams. Their substantive work will help protect students` and faculty`s freedom of expression, association, conscience and religion, as well as their due process rights. We hire articling students to work with staff in our New York and DC offices on the Brennan Center`s policy advocacy, research, and litigation initiatives. Activities may include legal and policy analysis; the development of laws at the federal, state and local levels; administrative and legislative advocacy; public education and science; and litigation before the courts of first instance and appeal. Our legal team of 13 lawyers is made up of former partners and key legal staff, Department of Justice employees and industry regulators. We advise internal clients and work with Western stakeholders on regulatory compliance, litigation, contract negotiations and corporate matters. and represents ISO in federal and state courts, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and utility commissions. Qualifications: Excellent legal research, analysis and writing skills; initiative, imagination and versatility; and a passion for our subjects. These positions are only open to current law students. Responsibilities: All interns assist with general administrative and bureaucratic work, including filing, photocopying, answering the phone, shipping and sending, coordinating meetings, creating routine correspondence, and covering the front desk. Articling students are personally supervised by our employees` lawyers. When students are required to perform a specific type of writing work for their course requirements, we do our best to allow students to write articles in the style of a law journal on legal issues that arise in our work.

We also hire interns to provide administrative and programmatic support to staff in our Communications, Democracy, Development, Events, Finance, Human Resources, Justice, Freedom and National Security, and Operations departments. Funding: Legal interns are not paid by the Brennan Center. Some summer interns who otherwise would not be able to live and work in New York or Washington, D.C. can apply for the James E. Johnson Legal Intern Fund. Named in honor of our former Chairman of the Board, who served for seven years, the Fund was established in 2011 to recognize Johnson`s outstanding leadership and ongoing commitment to the construction of the Brennan Center. The program is a prestigious opportunity and helps develop future leaders in the field of public interest. As a non-partisan grid operator, the California-based ISO provides access to the wholesale electricity market, which is designed to diversify resources and drive down prices. California`s Independent System Operator (ISO) manages the flow of electricity through high-voltage and transmission lines that make up 80 percent of California`s power grid. We protect the economy and the well-being of 30 million Californians by «keeping the lights on» 24/7. This is a great experience for students interested in the general workings of a non-profit organization. In addition to administrative and receiving tasks, the specific responsibilities of each department include: The California ISO operates independently – managing electron traffic on a power grid that does not belong to us – and ensuring that electricity is delivered safely, on time and reliably to utilities and consumers. Qualifications: Interns must have a passion for our subjects and excellent written and oral communication skills. Ideal candidates are independent, detail-oriented and well organized. Experience with Windows XP, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word is required.

The database experience is very useful. Must be open to changing responsibilities. These positions are only open to current students. We also offer some options, such as the Public Policy Advocacy Clinic, exclusively for New York University School of Law students. Law students are sometimes able to earn credit for their work, may develop law review articles and other articles on topics arising from the Centre`s activities, and are encouraged to apply for graduate scholarships at the Brennan Centre.
